Fantastic Breasts and Where to Find Them

That second to last panel is chilling.

To be honest, this is pretty much why I write fan fic, too.

In mainstream literature, there is zero overlap. You either write a “normal” novel or you write erotica. There are sections for both and never the twain shall meet.

But it’s not like that in fandom.

In fandom, you can have 70,000 words of romantic tension and plot and build-up that leads to a single sex scene followed by more plot, and that’s not considered weird; that’s not blurring any lines. It’s not too much plot to be a straight novel or too little sex to be erotica; it works. And it should work.

Because that is how sex is. Sex does not occur in grainy, seven minute clips. It occurs between people and it is part of a much larger narrative.

And call me old fashioned, but I think it’s better that way. More realistic, more empowering, and even more erotic. It’s better when you’ve seen the story leading up to it, when you know all the emotions involved, when you know the implications of it, when the actors are people with stories and thoughts and lives, when it has meaning beyond masturbation fodder.

Not that masturbation fodder doesn’t have its place, of course — it certainly does — but we’re a culture that’s been exposed to such an extreme binary. It is either “normal” art or it’s erotica. That’s had such incredibly damaging effects on our society that I am intensely relieved that fandom exists as a concept to throw a wrench in it.

Sex needs to be shown as more than just a thing unto itself. It exists as a part of people, complex people with rich and meaningful lives, with narratives. It needs to be shown for what it is, not just what it boils down to on YouPorn.

So keep that porn with plot coming, you guys.
